The benefits of regular massage are significant

Carolyn Sharkey, Remedial Massage Therapist, explains why regular massage should be a key element of your overall wellness strategy.

Having a massage is undeniably enjoyable and relaxing. Unfortunately, many people think these are the only benefits of massage.  The truth however, is that the physical and psychological benefits of regular massage extend well beyond just relaxation.  Just as a car requires ongoing maintenance to run effectively and efficiently, our bodies require regular maintenance to ensure we’re at peak physical and mental levels.

Managing Pain

Regular massage is particularly effective in pain management, such as the treatment of stiff and sore muscles.  Your therapist can help to loosen this tension, resulting in the increased circulation of blood, flushing out waste products from muscles and enabling greater range of motion.  Similarly, pain arising from arthritis and sports injuries can be relieved through massage, reducing the need to rely on pain medication.

Statistics reveal that an average office worker will sit for approximately 75% of their work day.  This affects circulation (particularly in the feet), can cause compression of the spinal disks, and causes fluid build-up in the legs.  On top of this, incorrect posture or a poor-quality chair can result in significant back, neck and shoulder pain.  The good news is that regular massage can help in counteracting the imbalances caused by prolonged periods of sitting.

Managing Stress

Another benefit of regular massage is that it lowers stress and stress-related hormones, thereby improving overall emotional health and wellbeing. There has been extensive research conducted over many years which indicates that regular massage therapy has proven biochemical effects on the body, including reduced cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and increased serotonin and dopamine levels (improving mood regulation, feelings and motivation).

In todays’ fast-paced world, we all deal with many day-to-day situations and events which can cause stress.  It may not be one single event which makes us feel stressed, but the combination of many smaller things which gradually build and build.  Often, we may not even be aware that we’re in an ongoing state of stress, simply because being busy and stressed is the new “normal”.   Some even wear it like a badge of honour.  Massage gives our bodies and minds the chance to unwind, de-stress and feel good.  It can alleviate the physical and emotional symptoms of stress, and improve many aspects of our lives.

Finding the right therapist

Finding the right therapist with the necessary skills and qualifications is essential in maximizing the benefits of massage therapy.  It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist, and are open and honest with them regarding your history, treatment goals and requirements.

Regular or ‘maintenance’ massage does not have to be weekly or even fortnightly.  For many clients, a monthly relaxation or remedial treatment is all that is needed to maintain their optimal wellness.
